Commonly shortened as IVF, In Vitro Fertilization is a comprehensive Assisted Reproductive Technique (ART) involving a series of complex procedures performed by fertility experts in an advanced IVF centre in India. Developments in IVF revolve back in time before 1970, where numerous fertility experts were involved in a wide stream research and studies to obtain a solution to infertility.

Fortunately, Dr. Edwards and Steptoe successfully pioneered the first IVF procedure in 1978 that led to the birth of the first IVF baby, currently known as Louise Brown. Now a grown up man, Brown has lived a healthy life like any other human conceived naturally.

IVF is an ultimate solution to male and female fertility a procedure that was originally conducted in the case of surrogacy. Due to the desire of having biological children rather than using a surrogate, IVF offers an opportunity for the mother to carry her own baby for 9 months.

IVF is a technical procedure where a woman’s eggs are retrieved from her ovary through a laparoscopic procedure (minimally invasive surgery) and are combined with her partner’s sperms in a laboratory for fertilization. The formed embryo cultured for a few days until the cell division (4-6) occurs and then the best embryo is transferred back to the woman’s uterus for implantation. A catheter is placed in the woman’s vagina and the embryo is injected into the uterus.

What happens before IVF treatment?

IVF treatment isn’t a decision one makes upon waking up. The procedure requires self-evaluation and guidance from the fertility expert. Obviously, the procedure is expensive and your financial analysis can help you determine your candidacy for the procedure, however much the fertility expert has recommended you for the treatment.

The IVF treatment ranges from $50,000 to $90,000 or more depending on the treatment cycles taken. Much as the IVF Cost in India is considered low, many infertile couples have failed to meet the financial costs of the treatment along the journey and have foregone the treatment. Here is what happens before the actual procedure.

Ovarian Stimulation

A woman’s ovaries will be stimulated with the help of Clomid or Gonadotropin the commonest types of fertility drugs. The drugs lead to follicular development which results in many mature eggs, which are retrieved for fertilization. A woman will be monitored by the fertility expert and a trigger shot will be administered approximately 34 hours before the eggs are retrieved.

In case no donor sperms are required, the man will have to provide sperms through masturbation

Oocyte Selection

This procedure is performed prior to fertilization as a way of selecting the most viable eggs suitable for fertilization. The semen will also be prepared by excluding inactive cells.

Here, the selected eggs and sperms are combined in a petri dish to for fertilization. The embryo will be cultured and sometimes, assisted laser hatching may be performed to increase the chances of implantation before the embryo is transferred to the uterus.

When is IVF suitable

Generally, in case natural conception fails, IVF is a suitable procedure after the following are determined;
Blocked or damaged Fallopian tubes
Anovulation or ovulation issues
Advancement in age
Previous Infections like PID, pelvic infection
Cervical mucus
Impaired sperm functions
Genetic disorders
Health conditions among others

Success rates

IVF provides 40% success rates per treatment cycle after a thorough examination. Also, IVF has the highest number of live babies born compared to IUI and ICSI.

Side effects

There are side effects which even include birth defects, but they can be reduced through embryo screening prior to its transfer. Other issues include;
Multiple births since more embryos may be transferred
Complications during pregnancy
Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome
Ectopic pregnancy

All in all, IVF provides infertile couples a chance to have a healthy baby when properly conducted by specialists.
